Improved integration with Constant Contact

Launched June 2016

We've moved to a newer and more robust technology offered by Constant Contact, and we've made it more straightforward to manage your email subscribers from LGL. We've also improved visibility into the subscription status for each Constant Contact list.

Key take-away: As of June 4, any subscribers added directly on the Constant Contact side will not come into LGL. You will need to add them to LGL, and the easiest way would be to export your list subscribers from Constant Contact and import them into LGL (making sure to match on email address). See below for details.

The biggest changes you'll notice:

  • A clear view into the Constant Contact status for constituents you add to and delete from your Constant Contact lists in your LGL account, as well as an improved synchronization process, meaning changes will be reflected more reliably in your Constant Contact account, and discrepancies will be easy to spot within LGL.
  • Visibility (within LGL) into who is on a given Constant Contact list, and the ability to push a single list's subscribers to Constant Contact.
  • A move to a one-way sync: You should now manage all LGL-related Constant Contact subscription activity within LGL. This means that adding and deleting constituents from your Constant Contact lists should be driven solely from LGL.
    • Q. What if I use sign-up forms that go directly into my Constant Contact account?
      • A. If you use Constant Contact widgets to let people sign up for your mailing lists, then you will want to hold off on the "complete replace" approach we're implementing until you've switched all of your sign-up forms so they directly populate your LGL account (vs directly into your Constant Contact account). Any subscribers added directly on the Constant Contact side will not come into LGL. You will need to add them to LGL, and the easiest way would be to export your list subscribers from Constant Contact and import them into LGL (making sure to match on email address).
      • Additional details on this appear at the bottom of this article.
    • Q. What if a subscriber unsubscribes using the link at the bottom of my Constant Contact emails?
      • A. Unsubscribe requests, as well as any errors due to undeliverable email addresses, WILL reflect back to LGL. Those are global status settings for the contact, and you'll see them in a convenient status filter in your LGL account.

What do you need to do?

  • In the Constant Contact Integration Settings area (within the Settings tab), you should check the box to set your account to use the LGL-only list management approach ("Replace existing lists completely ..."). Once you do this, every night (and whenever a list is "pushed' manually) LGL will completely replace the previous list. The benefit of checking this box is that you'll have clear visibility into your constituents' status just by looking at your LGL account. No more challenging reconciliation work!
    • LGL accounts with a Constant Contact integration in place prior to this launch will NOT be automatically switched to the "replace" option. We ask you to make that change yourself, to make sure you have time to adjust any sign-up forms you might have that populate your Constant Contact account directly.
    • LGL accounts that set up a Constant Contact integration after June 4, 2016 will be configured with the box checked by default, meaning that LGL will completely replace each list when upon syncing.

For those who are familiar with the old Constant Contact integration process, here is a quick summary of what has changed:

New Constant Contact Integration (as of June 4, 2016) Old Constant Contact Integration (launched June 2013)
Ability to push a specific LGL-managed list to Constant Contact on demand  Ability to sync all records back and forth between LGL and Constant Contact, which was not always efficient, and didn't display list assignments (making reconciliation difficult)
Improved visibility into both the overall status for constituents as well as the status they have on each list they are assigned to No visibility into status by list within the constituent record
Automatic nightly update of all records from LGL to Constant Contact Two-way sync of all records from LGL to Constant Contact (and back), which complicated reconciliation between LGL and Constant Contact
Increased visibility into all the lists and the status for each that LGL constituents are assigned to
Not available
Status of list assignments and record statuses are updated automatically, without needing to accept records through an integration queue Changes to subscription status needed to be manually accepted via the integration queue
True accounting of unsubscribers Not available
Increased visibility into the last sync date/time of each LGL-managed list Not available
Under the hood: LGL is moving to a newer version of the Constant Contact API, which is a more robust technology

Details on the LGL-only list management approach: In order to maintain an accurate accounting of which LGL constituents are assigned to which LGL-managed lists in Constant Contact, LGL will no longer pull information about list subscribers from Contact Contact into Little Green Light. Any contacts added directly to a list within Constant Contact (i.e., via the Constant Contact email subscription widget) will not be imported into Little Green Light.

The choice we ask you to make in your Integration Settings is whether or not you want LGL to completely replace your Constant Contact list each time we push an update (nightly or on demand).

  • Checking the box means we will completely replace your Constant Contact list each time. This is the way to go as long as you are doing all of your list additions and deletions on the LGL side (recommended).
  • Unchecking the box means LGL will still push over the complete list each time, but we won't purge the existing list in the process. This allows any pre-existing contacts to remain in place (which is what you want if you are continuing to collect new subscriber information via a Constant Contact sign-up widget). Any subscribers added directly on the Constant Contact side will not come into LGL. You will need to add them to LGL, and the easiest way would be to export your list subscribers from Constant Contact and import them into LGL (making sure to match on email address).

If you are currently using a Constant Contact-provided widget (or other external source) to add constituents to your LGL-managed lists, we recommend switching to using an LGL form instead (free with your LGL account). Once that's in place, you can safely check the box and allow LGL to completely replace your lists with every sync.

If you prefer to continue using the Constant Contact sign-up widget, make sure the box stays unchecked and note that contacts added via the widget will not be pulled into LGL from Constant Contact.
