Understanding tributes

In this article:

Introduction

Previously, you could record tribute gifts in Little Green Light by entering the gift from the donor (if a constituent record already existed) and adding a related gift to it. The related gift was the tribute. There was no way to record a one-off tribute gift from someone you didn’t also want to track as a constituent.

We recently added a better method for recording tributes that makes this process simpler to understand and use. It also makes it possible to record a tribute gift without needing to create a constituent record for the honoree or deceased person. When you start using your Little Green Light account as of January 2019, this is how you'll record tributes in your account.

How tributes work currently, compared with how they used to work

The table below contains an itemized list of how the current way of entering and acknowledging tribute gifts differs from how the feature previously worked.

“Current way”

“Previous way”

  • Tributes have their own primary area in the Fundraising tab, on a level with campaigns, funds, appeals, and events.
  • No one connected to a tribute gift, except the donor, needs to be a constituent
  • Notifications are handled in their own area for tributes (not within the Mailings tab)
  • Warning: When you have the new Tributes feature activated, it won’t be possible to manually enter “In honor” or “In memory” related gifts
  • Tributes are not standalone but instead exist behind the scenes, buried in gift entry, as related gifts
  • Anyone connected to an honorary/memorial gift must be a constituent
  • Notifications are handled as acknowledgments for the related gifts
Honorary gifts - without notification

  • During gift entry, select the Honorary - General tribute, or a named tribute
  • Connect a constituent to the tribute/gift as the honoree if desired (optional)
Honorary gifts - without notification

  • During gift entry, use related gifts to add an “In honor of” related gift
  • A constituent must exist or be created for the honoree
    Honorary gifts - with notification
  • In addition to the above, add recipients to be notified
  • Recipients can be constituents or non-constituents

Honorary gifts - with notification
  • In addition to the above, select a template
  • Only the constituent assigned to the related gift can be notified
     Memorial gifts - without notification
  • During gift entry, select the Memorial - General tribute, or a named tribute
  • Connect the deceased as a constituent to the tribute/gift if desired (optional)

Memorial gifts - without notification
  • During gift entry, use related gifts to add an “In memory of” related gift
  • A constituent must exist or be created for the deceased
Memorial gifts - with notification
  • In addition to the above, add recipients to be notified
  • Recipients can be constituents or non-constituents

Memorial gifts - with notification
  • In addition to the above, select a template for notification/acknowledgment
  • If family members should be notified, constituents must be created for each before the gift is entered, with a special setting applied to the relationship

If you haven't started using Tributes yet and want to start

If your account pre-dates January 2019 and does not have the Tributes feature enabled (you can tell whether it does by clicking on your Fundraising navigation dropdown and looking to see if a "Tributes" link is available there), you can enable it by navigating to the Settings > Subscription settings > Gift settings page, and checking the "Tributes" box, as shown here:

Then, when you navigate to Fundraising > Tributes, you’ll see the options for creating a tribute.

On the Tributes page, you then be able to manage named tributes, view/add/update tribute notification templates (mail or email), and process/review/print tribute notifications (by mail or email).

You will be able to either record a tribute directly in the gift or create a new named tribute at any time.

What happens to your old tribute gifts if you use the new feature?

If you have been using memorial/honorary “related gifts” until now and decide to enable and use the new Tributes feature going forward, your previously entered gifts will remain in place unchanged, as shown in this example.

However, previously created honorary/memorial gifts will be backfilled and assigned to the honorary/memorial general tributes, so you will be able to search for them like any tribute gift you record using the new feature.
